Dolomite Mine/Horsethief Creek Trail

  • Sawmill Trailhead Parking Lot Pinon Flats Transfer Station Road CA, 92561 United States (map)

During 2021, this area was ravaged by a wildfire. Friends’ volunteers will discuss fire ecology and how flora and fauna are reclaiming this area. The forested area was important to the Cahuilla people who lived off the land and more recently played a role in the mining history of the National Monument lands. This unique hiking opportunity offers a short 2.5 mile round trip hike to the site of an old dolomite mine.

If interested in hiking further, a longer 5 mile round trip hike to Horsethief Creek will be offered. This moderate hike follows an ancient Cahuilla path from the mountains to the desert floor - we will hike a portion that involves an elevation gain on the return of 708 feet.

RSVP is required and you must bring your ticket with you for check-in at 8:15 AM. Ticket reservations begin 14 days prior to the event. A suggested tax-deductible donation of $5.00 per person is appreciated and encouraged to support our volunteer programs. For more information contact the Visitor Center at 760-862-9984.
