Evolutionary History of the Tortoise

  • Santa Rosa & San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Visitor Center 51500 California 74 Palm Desert, CA, 92260 United States (map)

Ancestors of turtles, tortoises and terrapins (Testudines) date from about 260 million years ago. As of 2018 more than half of the Testudines are threatened with extinction, including the 3 species of Desert Tortoise. Is there hope for these slow-moving reptiles?
